Famous Economist, Professor Rosenzweigatfrom Yale University, Made Excellent Speech at SEM

On the afternoon of November 20, 2012, Professor Rosenzweig at Yale University gave an academic lecture titled on "Economic Development, Schooling and the Gender Division of Labor"in thehall of School of Economics and Management.

The Seminar was hosted by Vice dean Zhou Qin, meanwhile dean Xu Kangning and more than 200 teachers and students participated in the seminar. Professor Rosenzweig's lecture started with the fact that enrollment rate of women increases relative to menworldwide, and women get higher education returns than men, together with the fact that childhood nutrition investment has higher impact on girls' education. Subsequently, he hypothesized that female has a comparative advantage in terms of skills rather than physical.

Then Professor Rosenzweig created a new model considering career choices in accordance with comparative advantage and household best investments in education and health. In addition, he tested the theoretical model by taking advantage of unique rural data from Bangladeshi and urban data from China.Finally, empirical results validate the theoretical model. In the Q & A session, Professor Rosenzweig answered question sseriously and put forward his own insights oneconomic development and other issues. Professor Rosenzweig’s wise and gracious speech won plaudits of the teachers and students.

AS the Frank Altschul Professor of International Economics at Yale University, Professor Rosenzweig is also the director of Economic Growth Center and the associate researcher of NBER. During the studying for economic growth and labor economics, Professor Rosenzweig has published more than 150 academic papers in the first-class internationaljournals, such as American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Political Economy, Econometric and so on. Moreover, he has published many monographs and participated in the preparation of Handbook of Development Economics, Handbook of Population and Family Economics. Because of these achievements, Professor Rosenzweig enjoys a high reputation in the field of Economics.
