报告内容提要

The Virtual Physician Team (VPT) service offers healthcare platforms an opportunity to restructure online demand and address the imbalanced distribution of healthcare services. This study uses a difference-in-differences approach to empirically assess the causal effects of the VPT service on the overall demand of individual consultation services. And we explore the moderator effect of physicians with different ability levels and regions with different development levels, and the moderator effect of teams with different structures, including team character, team composition, team apartment and team size. Our findings reveal significant and positive impact of VPT service on overall demand, but significant and divergent impacts across physicians: demand decreases for high-ability physicians but increases for low-ability ones, resulting in an overall spillover effect. Consequently, healthcare demand of physicians has surged in developed regions while witnessing a decline in underdeveloped regions, supporting the “cannibalizing effect”. Additionally, we identify the heterogeneous impacts of specific team structures in different stages. We found that physicians with similar professional levels in different cities construct the virtual team to simultaneously play the aggregation and cooperation effects. And substitute teams increase more picture-text consultations in the short term, however, only complementary teams benefit in the long term.
